My grandmother walked from Mississippi to Detroit in 1942 with three children and $12. She built a house, raised a family, and never once asked for credit. She called it "just doing what had to be done." I call it the Great Migration made human. Her name was Ethel Mae Johnson. Say it.

My grandfather was one of the first Ghanaian engineers after independence. He built bridges the colonial engineers said couldn't be built with African hands. He kept every blueprint. I have them. They are proof that we were always already capable. We just needed to be left alone long enough to prove it.

My mother came to England from Jamaica in 1963 on the promise of a better life. She spent 40 years as a nurse in the NHS and they tried to deport her in 2018. The Windrush Scandal has a name now. My mother is one of those names. She is still fighting. She is still here. So am I.
